Maria Chavez Presentation

On May 19th, Maria Chavez (CRF 2016) gave the first of this season’s full-length residents’ presentations. Chavez, an abstract turntablist, sound artist, and DJ, presented clips from her recent sound installations, including the Rain of Applause for INKONST in Sweden (2014), Sound Bleed @ the Kitchen in New York (2015), and Wind Instruments @ the Block in Marfa, Texas (2016). Chavez then gave a live turntable performance using a collection of vinyl purchased that afternoon in Perugia.
Chavez stands with proprietor Fabrizio Croce outside of his record store, T-Trane, in Perugia.
Chavez gives a live performance of her abstract turntablism, employing techniques such as breaking records and using broken needles in order to improvise new sounds.
Chavez explains her technique to composer Cat Hope (CRF 2014) and Jeff Albucher, co-head of the Friends of Civitella Ranieri.
