The following video, a collaboration between two current Fellows, was recently made at Civitella. It sets a composition by Yoshi Onishi, 'Tr' (2011, rev. 2012), to an excerpt from Arturo Carrera's poem 'written with a nictograph'. It's a beautiful confluence, Arturo's poem about writing and silence, life and death, white and black set to Yoshi's piece, which also emphasizes the relationship between sound and silence. (N.B.: A nictograph (or 'nyctograph') is a shorthand writing device, invented by Lewis Carroll, which uses a system of dots or strokes organized within a grid.)
Poem translated by Craig Epplin
Music performed by Sean Katsuyama (violoncello) and Mahir Cetiz (piano)
Made at Civitella Ranieri, May 2012
