Excursion to Gubbio for the Ringing of the Bells
On Monday, May 14th, several of our Fellows attended the "Ringing of the Bells" ceremony in the nearby town of Gubbio. This ceremony officially opens il Corso dei Ceri, Gubbio's most important holiday. Our Fellows joined hundreds of people in Gubbio's Piazza Grande to watch and listen as volunteers ring the church's massive bells. The next day, many Fellows went back to the town to watch the famous Corso dei Ceri. The Corso, or "Ceri Run," is a race in which the city's three contrade hoist massive statues of Saint Ubaldo, Saint George, and Saint Anthony on their shoulders as they make their way up the mountain and to the Church of Sant'Ubaldo. Saint Ubaldo, Gubbio's patron saint, is bound to win every year. The Corso ends with much feasting and festivities all throughout the town.
