Gubbio Visit: the Festa dei Ceri

On May 15th, a group of Fellows visited the nearby town of Gubbio to witness the annual "Festa dei Ceri," or Race of the Candles, which occurs each year on the eve of the feast of St. Ubaldo, the patron saint of bricklayers. The spectacle involves a day of festivities, culminating in a race between three groups of "ceraioli" who run throughout the town carrying large wooden pedestals representing candles, each topped by a different saint. The Fellows were pleased to experience a local tradition dating as far back as the 12th century, and particularly enjoyed the ringing of the campanone in Palazzo dei Consoli prior to the race.

Carol Tyler, D. A. Powell, Maria Chavez, and Kim Insuk (CRF 2016) take in  the scenic view from Piazza Grande.
Former intern Ilaria Locchi, dressed in support of St. Ubaldo, explains the course of the race to Maria Chavez (CRF 2016).
Linda Buckley (CRF 2016) admires a local boy dressed in blue in support of San Giorgio.
D. A. Powell (CRF 2016) stands in front of the Palazzo dei Consoli, which is decorated with red banners representing the city of Gubbio.
