20th Anniversary Events in New York

2014 marks Civitella's 20th Anniversary, and we have put together a slate of events in New York in celebration.  More events will be scheduled throughout 2014 in Italy and New York.

RSVP to mia@civitella.org if you plan to attend any of these events.  Please note that space is limited for some of the tours, so respond early to secure your place.

Saturday, March 15, 10:00-11:00 am
Tour of Piero Della Francesca: Personal Encounters
The Metropolitan Museum of Art (1000 Fifth Avenue)
Note: Admission by donation
Executive Director Dana Prescott will lead a viewing of the exhibition, 'Piero Della Francesca: Personal Encounters' at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  This exhibition of Della Francesca's devotional paintings includes the Madonna di Senigallia, which many Civitellians have enjoyed seeing on excursions to Urbino.

Monday, March 17, 6:30 to 9:30 pm
Green Ink: Poetry and Tattoos
Bowery Poetry (308 Bowery)

Poet Tom Healy (Director's Guest 2013) will read selections of his work while receiving a tattoo from tattoo artist Duke Riley.  Have a pint in honor of Saint Patrick's Day and listen to some poetry; intrepid members of the audience can even get a tattoo while they are there.  Civitellians can meet up with Civitella staff at Bowery Poetry at 6:00 for a drink prior to the start of the event.

Thursday, March 20, 11:00 am to 12:00 pm
Tour of the Map Division
New York Public Library (Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street)
Note: Limited to 15 participants, no admission

Civitella Intern Freya Yost works part time in the Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division at the New York Public Library.  She has selected several rarely seen maps of Italy that range from 1800 to the present for a private Civitella viewing in the Map Reading Room.
In addition to some of the oldest maps in the collection, Freya has selected maps that detail the region of Umbria around Civitella and show intriguing aspects of local history, geography, and the art of cartography.  She will explain how to read a map and some of the basic elements of cartography, such as the compass rose, cartouche, legend, and whimsy.

Thursday, April 3, 6:00 to 9:00 pm
Civitella Ranieri Annual Party
ISSUE Project Room (22 Boerum Place)

Civitella Ranieri will hold its Annual Party at ISSUE Project Room in Brooklyn.  Please join the Civitella staff - including Program Coordinator Diego Mencaroni, who will be flying in from Italy - for an evening of food, drink, and friendship as we honor the 2013 Fellows and Director's Guests and celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Civitella Ranieri Center and Foundation.  The program will include performances, reminiscences, and the premiere of the 2013 Online Catalog.

Tuesday, June 3, 10:00 to 11:30 am
Tour of Phoenix: Xu Bing at the Cathedral
Cathedral of Saint John the Divine (1047 Amsterdam)
Note: Limited to 20 participants, $5 per person

Program Associate Mia Michelson-Bartlett is an Educator at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine.  She will lead tour of artist Xu Bing's (CRF 1999) installation 'Phoenix,' in which two 12-ton phoenix sculptures made from recycled construction materials are suspended from the 124-foot-high nave of the Cathedral.  Mia will lead the group into the Cathedral's walls and along its hidden corridors for an exclusive look at the building and the artwork.
