Travellers in Tuscany and Umbria
Please join us on Friday, August 13, 2010, at 4:00 p.m. for a wine and refreshment reception in the gallery, followed by illustrated talks on "Travelers in Umbria and Tuscany" by art historian John Wilton-Ely and writer Valerie Thornhill. The presentations will be followed by time for questions and answers.
John Wilton-Ely, Emeritus Professor in Art History, and former Director of Education at Sotheby’s, London, will discuss the 18th-century Grand Tour which brought countless connoisseurs, collectors and artists to Italy from Britain and North America in search of Renaissance art, the classical past and dramatic scenery. In the 19th Century, Romantic poets and Victorian novelists laid the foundations of the enduring love affair with Italy by the English-speaking world.
Valerie Thornhill, art historian and author, will explore the post World War II Anglo-Saxon genre of books about restoring houses in Mediterranean countries and Tuscany in particular, with reference to the changes in traditional farming and the landscape. In conclusion she will introduce her recently published novel In Restoration, relate its creation to her own house restoration and garden near Cortona
